Recent Highlights / News Regarding Kapetan Zaharias: * Two books on Kapetan Zaharias, published in Greek, came out in 1998. The first was from the author Nikos Matheos (book is about 700 pages). The second was from the author / journalist, Sarantos Kargakos and the book was titled "Zaharias Barbitsiotis, O Daskalos Tis Klephtourias." * Unveiling of the statue of Kapetan Zaharias in the city of Sparta, Laconia in May 1998. We were honored with the presence of the US Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Nicholas Burns. * Ceremony honoring the 240th anniversary of the birth of Zaharias took place in October of 1999, in the village of Varvitsa, Laconia. |

Translation Of The Book "H Barbitsa Kai H Skoura Tis Lakaidaimonos: Istoria Kai Laographia." From The Author Poti Roumelioti. Kapetan Zaharias Barbitsiotis * The legendary and well known klephto-captain of the Peloponnese, Zaharias the Barbitsiotis, was born in Barbitsa on 22 of October 1759, from the Pantelakos family, in which it is believed their original roots was from the village of Gortinia of the region Arkoudorema (prefecture of Arcadia), the same place of origin as the Kolokotronis family. ** His father was named Thodoros. In 1775 the Turks killed the eldest brother of Zaharias, who was named Pantelis. After this incident, Zaharias became a klepht (rebel fighter) in the mountains, in order to seek revenge against the Turks after what they did to his brother. He went, at about the age of 17, to the village of Loggastra (Northern Laconia), and joined the rebel unit Kapetan Matzari, who was from the village Tegea. A year later, during the battle of Rekitsas (named after the monastery in the southern region of Arcadia), against the Turks, Zaharias took out his sword and charged at them, while at |
